AED 101

An AED is a small , portable machine that analyzes heart rhythms for any irregularities and, if necessary , instructs the trained help to give an electrical shock to the heart of an sudden cardiac arrest sufferer.  This shock , called defibrillation, can allow the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm .

An AED employs   voice prompts to advise   the trained help. Once the machine is started up , the rescuer will be directed to apply the two pads that come with the AED to the sufferer’s chest. Once in place , the AED will start to monitor the SCA victim’s heart rhythm.  If a “shockable” rhythm is detected , the unit will charge itself and advise the rescuer to stand clear of the SCA victim and to push the shock button.

An Automated External Defibrillatoris hard wired to communicate to the rescuers exactly what to do , employing  voice and visual instructions. trained help attach   adhesive electrode pads on the SCA victim’s chest. Through these electrodes, the Automated External Defibrillator is programmed to automatically analyze the electrical activity of the heart to determine if a “shockable” rhythm is present .

Whether you suffer an Sudden Cardiac Arrest at work   or in the Hospital Emergency Room , defibrillation is THE treatment .
